Chronic Rhinitis

Conditions & Diseases, HEALTH

Chronic rhinitis refers to inflammation of the inner lining of the nose that persists for more than 12 weeks. It can cause symptoms such as a stuffy nosecongestionsneezingrunny nose, and itchy eyes. Let’s explore the possible triggers for chronic rhinitis:

  1. Allergic Rhinitis:
    • Allergens in the air, such as pollendust mitesmoldpet dander, and cockroach residue, can lead to allergic rhinitis. During an allergic response, your immune system overreacts to these allergens, resulting in symptoms.
    • Seasonal variations play a role. Tree and flower pollen allergies are more common in spring, while grass and weed allergies tend to occur in summer and fall.
  2. Nonallergic Rhinitis:
    • Unlike allergic rhinitis, nonallergic rhinitis doesn’t involve the immune system. Instead, it can be triggered by environmental factors:
      • Changes in temperaturebarometric pressure, or humidity.
      • Exposure to strong odors (such as perfumes, colognes, smoke, and dust).
      • Consuming spicy foodsalcohol, or other dietary factors.
      • Exercise can also trigger nonallergic rhinitis..
      • Hormonal changes during pregnancy or puberty, as well as certain medications (e.g., hormone replacement therapy and oral contraceptives), may contribute to nonallergic rhinitis.
  3. Other Factors:
    • Medications: Some drugs, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and certain blood pressure medications, can cause rhinitis.
    • Irritants: Exposure to smokefumes, and other air pollutants can irritate the nasal lining.
    • Underlying Medical Conditions: Conditions like asthmachronic sinusitis, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) may contribute to chronic rhinitis.

If you’re experiencing persistent symptoms, consider consulting a doctor. They can perform an allergy test to determine if allergies are causing your rhinitis. Additionally, lifestyle modifications and medications can help manage symptoms and improve your quality of life. Remember to seek professional advice for personalized recommendations.
