Dr. Gilbert Makabali initiated the discussion by engaging the Clinical Pharmacist Supervisor and clinical pharmacy staff in a series of questions regarding clinical pharmacy practice, patient outcomes, medication management, and clinical documentation.

The discussion proceeded to the treatment and management of hypertension. Dr. Makabali discussed different classes of medications used in the management of hypertension, including beta-blockers, diuretics, and other antihypertensive medications. He emphasized the importance of considering each patient’s individual clinical condition when selecting and managing pharmacologic therapy.

Dr. Makabali also emphasized that hypertension management should consider factors beyond medication alone, including physical and lifestyle factors as well as economic considerations, particularly the patient’s ability to sustain long-term treatment.

He further stated that the clinical responsibilities and scope of practice of pharmacists should be clearly defined within the hospital’s clinical processes.

Dr. Makabali also stated that the Clinical Pharmacists will be included in the DRG Protocol Committee.
